The national capital of New Delhi turned into a massive police citadel on Saturday as the Cockroach Janata Party called for massive demonstration against the ouster of Chief Election Commissioner Gynanesh Kumar over the alleged irregularities in SIR exercise.
Unlike the NEET protests undertaken a few weeks ago, the government this time tried its best to contain agitators by use of heavy police force and unwarranted measures like restricting public transport, detentions and house arrests even before the stage is set for what could have been another large scale display of public discontent.
Just before things could properly start, the Delhi Police detained CJP leaders like Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka right when they landed at the airport. Thousands of workers, students, and lawyers heading to the protest site were also rounded up by police and kept locked up at Chhatrasal Stadium.
In the evening, former CMs and leaders like Mamta Benerjee and Arvind Kejriwal were also taken into custody while trying to march towards the protest site. This heavy-handed police crackdown drew severe backlash from opposition leaders, legal experts, and civil rights groups across the globe.
Many have openly criticised the government for using excessive force, sealing state borders, and causing massive travel chaos for ordinary citizens.
Despite the harsh state resistance, the CJP announced that they will keep marching to Jantar Mantar every single day until Gyanesh Kumar steps down from his post.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court stepped in towards the end of the day. Earlier, the apex court had ordered authorities not to put a total blanket ban on public transport and metro services just because of a protest.
But because police allegedly ignored those directions and continued heavy blockades, the court announced a rare and special Sunday hearing to look into a contempt plea against the authorities.
With the protest against Gynanesh Kumar not yet done, all eyes will be on Sunday as Supreme Court is likely to pass a crucial order on the proceedings that unfolded so far and this could define the direction of this remonstration.
