Don’t Cut Internet To Kids, Supreme Warns Center!

It is already known that the government of India has been contemplating the idea of restricting social media usage for kids under 16. It was further speculated that certain measures might be taken to restrict general internet usage for under age kids in order to prevent them from aggressive content.

However, this matter was severely ridiculed by the Supreme Court as it made a very interesting announcement today.

In a significant judgement, the Supreme Court has declared the right to access and use the internet a fundamental right under Articles 21 of the Constitution.

The court made it very clear that every individual, including a child has this right to use Internet, adding that it would be absurd to deny this right to children altogether.

This comes at a time when the centre had been contemplating multiple measures in order to reduce the exposure of kids to adult content on the internet.

The court said a complete ban is not the solution to online safety, suggesting parental consent, private accounts and restrictions on messages from unknown adults. The court also called for a national database to identify and remove child se*ual abuse material.
