YS Jagan Regrets Support To EC, Demands Neutral Panel

The recent statements of YSR Congress party president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy have become a talking point not just within the political circles of Andhra Pradesh but also triggered a big debate at the centre because they seem like he is no longer trying to please the Delhi bosses anymore.

After extending support to the protests of Cockroach Janata Party to remove the Chief Election Commissioner against the NDA government at the centre, Jagan has now openly admitted that his party had done a big mistake in by supporting the law for picking the Chief Election Commissioner in the past when he was in power.

Addressing a press meet in Tadepalli earlier today, Jagan made bold comments on the manner in which the Election Commissioners at the centre and state level are being chosen by those in power.

According to Jagan, ruling political parties should never have the power to appoint election officials directly. He explained that a fair system needs a completely neutral body to handle these appointments instead of the government in power.
To make his point clear, he gave a simple example about tests. He said that a student can never choose their own examiner because people will always doubt the results, no matter how honest the process is.

The current rules allow a panel made up of Prime Minister party, one Minister of the ruling government and the Leader of Opposition to select top election officers. Jagan pointed out that this setup creates an unfair majority vote, which pushes out the voice of the opposition and damages public trust.

He strongly believes this system has major flaws that affect both central and state election boards. He wants the law changed back so that independent figures like the Chief Justice of India are included in the selection committee once again.

It may be recollected that Jagan supported the Parliament bill that altered the selection process for election commissioners when he had 22 MPs from his party. He also never questioned the integrity of the electoral process when he won in the 2019 elections. Now, he is opposing the same system after losing power.

Jagan seems to be changing his stand and moving away from the centre going by his recent statements. Political experts believe that he might be hinting at a break up with the BJP at the centre.
