It is a common tradition for star players to fetch a huge amount of money during the mega auction in the IPL. A similar thing happened this year as Lucknow went all out to secure the services of wicket-keeper batsman, Rishabh Pant.
Turned out to be the costliest player in the history of IPL as Lucknow spent a shocking Rs 27 crore on him in the auction. This was always going to be a questionable decision, considering the fact that pant did not necessarily return to his previous best form after recovering from the car accident.
But still, Lucknow placed their trust completely in him, and even made him the captain of the side at the expense of the expulsion of KL Rahul. It was made to look like Rishabh Pant is going to be the face and future of this franchise.
But in reality, when it comes to statistics, it needs to be said that this acquisition is one of the worst ever deals in the history of IPL.
In the 13 matches that had played for Lucknow till now, he scored just 151 runs. His batting average is around 10, which is way below the acceptable number for such a costly acquisition.
In terms of investment and returns, could perhaps be argued that this is possibly one of the worst ever deals made in IPL. Pant simply hasn’t been able to pay back the huge investment and trust that Lucknow leadership had in him.
Even if we set the individual batting performances of this youngster aside, he had failed to create a significant impact as the captain as well. Lucknow is one of the first teams to be eliminated from the tournament this year and that sums up their story.
The only hope now is that Rishabh Pant will come good next year, working hard on his batting performances and deliver what is expected of him.
