Govt To Bring A Regulation On ‘Work From Home’

The pandemic has changed the work life of people. Work From Home (WFH) is the new normal and people are still working from home or following Hybrid work schedules. Just when the threat of virus is assumed to be coming down, the new variant of virus has induced a little fear while private sector employees who planned to get back to office, are in second thoughts.

Amidst this the government of India is planned to bring a regulation on Work From Home as the government received several complaints against private companies. These companies are said to be forcing and stressing their employees to work for longer hours and this is said to be taking a toll on their mental health.

Earlier this year in January, the GoI formalised work from home for the services sector. This allowed employers and employees to mutually decide on the work hours and other services. This has become a huge weapon for private sector companies.

The government of India wants to provide a legal framework for the new models of work that could benefit employees and stakeholders. For employees the framework would include determining the working hours and providing for the basic expenses that are being incurred by the employees for working from home.

Besides this the GoI also approached a consultancy to study the WFH trend and decide the ‘future of work’ in the backdrop of pandemic.

A legislation to give legal backing to work from home culture is the need of the hour.
