The government of India is all set to bring new reforms for the electoral process in the country. These amendments will be made based on the Election Commission’s recommendations. There are four key amendments to be made in order to make the electoral process comprehensive.
The major one among them is the linking of voter ID and Aadhaar cards. This will be done on a voluntary basis, unlike the pan-card and Aadhar Card linking.
As per the Election Commission, the pilot projects which have been conducted were successful. According to it, this process will weed out duplicate voter IDs.
Another proposal made by the EC is to allow more attempts to register in the electoral rolls. From January 1st next year, first-time voters (who are turning 18) will have a chance to register four times a year with four different cut-off dates. Until now, they could do it only once a year.
One more proposal made was to make the law gender-neutral for service officers. This allows the husband of a service officer to vote as well. Until now, only the wife of a service officer is allowed to vote and not the husband of a women service officer.
Apart from these, EC will now have all the powers required to take control over the premises of where the elections are conducted. The government will amend these proposals in the winter sessions of the parliament.
