COVID: India Sees Sharp Rise In Cases

INDIA: India has witnessed a sharp rise in COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours as it recorded 58,097 fresh cases. A total of 2,135 cases of Omicron variant of coronavirus have been detected across the country so far. The active caseload currently stands at 2,14,004, the health ministry stated in its 8 am bulletin. So far, 15,389 coronavirus patients recovered in the last 24 hours, taking the total recoveries to 3,43,21,803.

As per the latest data, more than 147.72 crore COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered so far under the Nationwide Vaccination Drive. About Omicron, the highest number of new variant cases are in Maharashtra(653), followed by Delhi(464), Kerala(185), Rajasthan. Telangana is at seventh position with a total of 84 omicron cases and Andhra in 12th with 24 cases.

US: The United States set a global record on Monday, reporting more than one million COVID-19 cases within 24 hours. The number of Omicron variant cases has been spreading rapidly in recent days. In just one week, the country has recorded 3.4 million cases at an average of 486,000 per day. The Omicron strain accounted for 95% of new COVID-19 infections last week. The mutated variant accounted for around 59% of national US cases in the week ending December 25.

The US health authorities registered more than three times as many new cases as in any previous wave of the coronavirus. About 1 of every 100 Americans have been reported as a positive case in just the last week, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
