#HathrasCase: UP Police cremated victim without family?

The rape and murder of a Dalit woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras is now the talk of the country. The victim girl died yesterday while undergoing treatment in a hospital in New Delhi. However, in an unexpected twist, the victim was cremated without the family’s consent.

The visuals of the UP Police taking the victim’s corpse to an unidentified location with full security and later burning her to ashes are caught on media and these visuals are going viral on social media.

The family members of the 20 year old Dalit woman claimed that they wanted to perform the final rights today morning but the police forced us to do it immediately. Upon the refusal, the police have cremated her.

“No, they did it on their own. We’re scared. Police forced us to take the body to the cremation ground. We’d said we’ll do it in the morning,” said the woman’s brother as quoted by ANI. This led to an outrage on social media but the UP government and police deny this. They claim that the family’s consent was taken before the cremation and they were present at the location in the night.

Meanwhile UP CM Yogi Adityanath took to his Twitter that a special investigation team (SIT) has been appointed to probe the case. The investigation should be wrapped up in a week time and the case would be taken up by fast-track court.

PM Modi is also said to have called UP CM regarding the crime and directed the UP government to do justice to the girl’s family. That’s UP for us. A state deep in crime against women and there is no protection be it in any government.
