India Crosses Grim Milestone, COVID-19 Death Crosses 1 Lakh

More than a lakh Indians died due to COVID-19 despite having relatively lower mortality levels due to the pandemic. India now stands at second in terms of the total number of people infected by Corona. However, when it comes to the absolute number of deaths due to COVID-19, India ranks 3rd.

Brazil, with relatively lower number of cases as compared to India, has more number of deaths. But, the United States, which has the world’s largest number of cases and deaths, reported mortality numbers double than that of India.

Over two lakh people succumbed to Corona virus in Trump’s United States. Over 1.44 lakh people died due to COVID-19 in Brazil.

However, India is still considered to be a nation with low mortality due to COVID-19. Senior citizens in the United States are more vulnerable to the pandemic than their counterparts in India.

The mortality due to COVID-19 can be more accurately measured by two indicators- Case Fatality Rate(CFR) and deaths per lakh population. In a country with a huge population size, the absolute number of deaths alone does not reveal the correct picture.

India stands at 18th position among 20 most affected nations when compared on the indicator of deaths per lakh population. The deaths per lakh population stand at 7.5 percent.

The case fatality rate is the ratio between the number of deaths and the total number of cases. The CFR in India is at 1.6 percent, which is substantially lower than the United States(2.8 percent) and Brazil(3 percent). Mexico and the United Kingdom, which have a much lower number of cases than India, surprisingly have much higher CFR. 10.4 percent of people infected by COVID-19 in Mexico and 9.2 percent in the UK died due to the virus. Our hostile neighbor Pakistan also has a higher CFR of 2.1 percent. But, other South Asian neighbors like Bangladesh(1.4 percent), Nepal(0.6 percent), and Sri Lanka(0.4 percent) have much lower CFR than India.
