IPL 2020 Gets Record Breaking Viewership

The just concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) has made another record and this time it is with the viewership. According to IPL chairman Brijesh Patel, 13th edition of the IPL saw a record-breaking 28 percent increase in viewership compared to the last edition.

The 2020 IPL was held in UAE because of the pandemic situation in India. The tournament began on September 19th and it was Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) who played the first match. It can be noted the first match too got a similar reception. The opening match between MI and CSK was watched by 200 million viewers all over the world.

Meanwhile the official broadcaster Disney-Star India is estimated to have crossed revenues of Rs 2,600 crore from the streaming of IPL matches. Around Rs 2,300 to Rs 2,400 crore of advertising revenue from TV and Rs 250 crore from HotStar which is OTT platform that live streams all the matches.

Despite the pandemic, Disney-Star hiked the ad rates by 20 percent this year as compared to last year and reportedly charged Rs 12-12.5 lakh for every 10 seconds ad between the overs.

On the contrary, media experts opined that the IPL has brought back some sort of normalcy in the industry. All in all the 2020 edition of IPL is a huge success.
