Mysore Pak, a beloved Indian sweet famed for its rich, buttery flavor and melt-in-the-mouth texture, has long been a staple at weddings, festivals, and housewarming ceremonies. Despite the surge of modern desserts, Mysore Pak continues to hold its place as a sentimental favorite across generations.
But now, this classic treat has found itself at the center of a patriotic movement.
After the recent terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives, a wave of public outrage has swept the nation. As emotions run high, some people have turned their attention to anything that even remotely resembles the name “Pakistan.” The word ‘Pak’ in Mysore Pak, though rooted in the Sanskrit word “paka” (meaning ‘to cook’), has come under scrutiny simply for its phonetic similarity to the country’s name.
Riding on this emotional wave, sweet shop owners in Rajasthan have begun renaming Mysore Pak to Mysore Shri. Their reasoning: to remove any association, however unintended, with Pakistan. A few shop owners have gone a step further, rebranding other sweets as well. “Moti Pak,” “Aam Pak,” and “Gond Pak” are now being sold under the names ‘Moti Shri,’ ‘Aam Shri,’ and ‘Gond Shri.’
Still, the trend is gaining attention across social media and among local business communities, with calls for more such renamings emerging in solidarity with the national mood.
