‘2 Rupee Doctor’ Passes Away

Dr A K Rayu Gopal from Kannur district, Kerala was a truly respected and loved doctor who spent his life serving the poor. He was known by many as the “people’s doctor” or the “2 Rupee Doctor” because he treated patients for just 2 rupees. He passed away the other day, at the age of 80 due to age-related health problems. His loss is deeply felt by the people he served with so much love and care.

Dr Gopal worked as a doctor for fifty years. Every day, people from Kannur and nearby areas came to his clinic to get treated. His clinic was in his home, which was named Lakshmi. He started seeing patients as early as 4 in the morning and continued until 4 in the evening. No matter how many people came, he gave everyone the same attention and care.

Dr Gopal strongly believed that good healthcare should not depend on money. That is why he only charged 2 rupees, so even the poorest person could get treatment. His entire life was an example of how a doctor can serve society with love and honesty.

He is survived by his wife, one son, and one daughter. They now carry the memories of a man who was not just a doctor but a true symbol of kindness and hope. People in Kannur and many others will always remember Dr A K Rayu Gopal for his big heart, his dedication, and the many lives he healed.
