1 Rupee Plan: Game Changer For BSNL

For a long time, now, there have been several complaints about the pricing systems of leading mobile network operators like Airtel and Jio. These two leading service providers frequently change the prices of their prepaid plans which isn’t sitting well with the public.

While there is substantial public backlash on these true leading platforms, government operated service BSNL has entered the scene with what appears to be a potentially game changing idea.

Earlier, last month, BSNL introduced a new prepaid plan that costs just one rupee per month and comes with unlimited voice calls and 2GB data per day. This plan was originally supposed to last from August 1-31.

But after witnessing insane response from the public and a substantial inflow in the number of new subscribers, BSNL has announced that this program is going to be extended till September 15.

The best thing about this new plan by the BSNL is that it comes with a free BSNL SIM card as well. So at the cost of one rupee, users can be getting one month of free phone calls and internet usage, which is a pretty big deal.

At a time when there is already growing concerns about Jio and Airtel, it is very smart of BSNL to come up with something this economical. This could potentially take away the user base from Airtel and Jio, which are already facing complaints.

Incidentally, there was always a narrative that BSNL must surely put its hand up and become a strong network in order to counter the fully private companies like Jio and Airtel. With thoughtful programmes, like this BSNL is certainly making the right moves.

As of August 2025, Jio has 46.4 crore users while Airtel has 38.8 crore users. BSNL is lacking behind on this list with 3.4 crore users. But with economical plans and better network coverage, BSNL can certainly make a lot of progress.
