The Trump administration continues to crack down on immigrants, claiming they have taken away jobs meant for Americans. In contrast, tech billionaire and Tesla founder Elon Musk recently said Indian immigrants have contributed greatly to the American economy.
In the middle of this debate, US tech giant Apple has appointed Indian origin AI veteran Amar Subramanya as its new vice president of AI. He replaces longtime Apple executive John Giannandrea. Apple said Subramanya will report to software chief Craig Federighi and lead major areas such as Apple Foundation Models, machine learning research, and AI safety and evaluation.
Apple CEO Tim Cook thanked Giannandrea for shaping and advancing the company’s AI work. He said AI has always been a key part of Apple’s strategy and welcomed Subramanya to Craig’s leadership team. He added that Craig has been driving Apple’s AI efforts, including work on a more personalised Siri that is expected to arrive next year.
Amar Subramanya joined Apple from Microsoft, where he served as corporate vice president of AI. Before that, he worked at Google for nearly sixteen years and was the head of engineering for the Gemini assistant. Apple believes his deep expertise in AI and machine learning, along with his experience in bringing research into real products, will play an important role in the company’s future innovation.
