It was not long before the Indian civil aviation industry was undergoing a significant turbulence with mass flight cancellations and subsequent backlash from the public. A major contributor for this was the Indigo airlines which was in turn affected by pilots protests and other factors.
The central government was also very furious with Indigo airlines over the mass cancellation of hundreds of flights which also invited negative feedback from the public.
Now, several months after this phenomena, Indigo airlines CEO Pieter Elbers has communicated that he is stepping down with immediate effect due to personal reasons.
Today, March 10, the chief executive officer of IndiGo, Pieter Elbers, resigned with immediate effect for personal reasons. This comes three months after widespread operational disruptions leading to flight cancellations for thousands of passengers that triggered regulatory scrutiny.
In a public statement, IndiGo said Elbers had stepped down from his role as CEO of its parent company, InterGlobe Aviation and the carrier further added that managing director Rahul Bhatia would oversee operations in the interim until a new chief executive is appointed.
Earlier, between December 3 and 5 last year, IndiGo cancelled 2,507 flights and delayed 1,852 flights, affecting more than 300,000 passengers nationwide. The government of India and the civil aviation ministry was also furious with what had happened. And now, something significant has happened as the CEO has stepped down.
