Over the last few years, several state governments across India have been taking pretty strong measures against social media abuse and fabricated narratives. Now it is the turn of Telangana government to take a pretty significant decision on this matter.
While speaking in Assembly today, Telangana cabinet minister Ponnam Prabhakar made a significant announcement.
The Senior Congress leader announced that anyone who keeps posting derogatory and character assassinating stuff on social media will find themselves in deep legal mess. Also, any posts that are targeted at inflicting religious conflict or communal hate will be treated severely and even possible jail time.
Reliable sources indicate that the government is considering a rule that may mandate up to seven years in jail for those involved in such hate crimes, though the official stance of the government on this is yet to be confirmed.
This is a pretty significant decision taken by the Telangana Government as landing years in prison over social media posts is completely unprecedented and unheard of till now. At the same time, this is pretty much necessary these days as people are posting all kinds of stuff on social platforms without any fear of Judiciary.
Freedom of speech is one thing, but inflicting social disharmony and communal violence is not acceptable. Though this new proposal made by the Telangana government legal scrutiny, the thought process is perhaps understandable, considering the wild stuff that’s being posted on social platforms these days.
