At a time when NRIs are desperate to secure citizenship of foreign countries, a 94 year old Andhra woman named Kondragunta Mahalakshmamma wants to become an Indian citizen again after giving up her prestigious US citizenship. She is a native of Chintagumpula village in Chinaganjam mandal of Bapatla in Andhra Pradesh.

The news is currently going viral as the nonagenarian appeared before Bapatla District Collector J Venkata Murali on Wednesday and requested him to make her an Indian citizen at the earliest. She was accompanied by son Buchaiah Chowdary, who is currently working as a doctor in Mangalagiri.

Many years ago, her husband passed away. After that, she moved to the United States in July 2000 to live with her son, who works as a doctor. She became a US citizen and lived there for about 18 years. In 2018, she came back to India with her son and settled in her old village. She has already given up her US citizenship and applied for Indian citizenship online.

She said her only wish is to spend her last days in her home country and to die as an Indian citizen. She also promised to follow all the laws of India. The officer said they will check her application and send it to the government for approval after following the due process.

The story of this old lady has sparked widespread debate among the public as she set an example that one should never forget their roots and homeland.
