On Saturday morning, Delhi police removed activist Sonam Wangchuk from his protest site at Jantar Mantar and taken to the Safdarjung hospital, as he entered the 21st day of his indefinite hunger strike. He has been on a fast since June 28, demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged leaks in the NEET examination papers.
The police action triggered intense sloganeering and confrontation by activists of the “Cockroach Janata Party,” who are leading the demonstration. Meanwhile, its founder Abhijeet Dipke alleged through his social media post that the police have beaten and detained him at the protest site during this chaos.
The development follows a day after IPS officer Anurag Sharma took charge as Delhi Police Commissioner. The protest site is being immediately cleared and the police have appealed to organisers to vacate the place peacefully.
“As per orders of Hon’ble High Court and on expert medical advise due to the deteriorating health condition of Sonam Wangchuk, he has been shifted to the hospital for essential medical care,” Delhi Police wrote in a social media post on X.
It is a known fact the High Court had recently ordered authorities to perform daily clinical health checks and step in with necessary medical care to Sonam Wangchuk. The next hearing is supposed to take place on Monday.
Wangchuk extended his support to the satirical political outfit Cockroach Janata Party, which started gaining momentum in the wake of NEET paper leak. They have been demanding the removal of Dharmendra Pradhan.
The government has so far not taken any administrative decisions with regard to the paper leak. But, it cancelled the paper and conducted it again. The results were declared yesterday.
