Tripura DGP Dies by Suicide With Service Revolver?

In a shocking development that shook the entire police fraternity across the country, Tripura’s Director General of Police (DGP), Anurag Dhankar, was tragically found dead on Monday within his office cabin at the state police headquarters in Agartala.

Initial police reports suggest a suspected case of suicide, with preliminary findings indicating that the top cop may have used his own service weapon. Mr. Dhankar was immediately rushed to the Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital at around 12:00 PM. Medical professionals attempted to revive him using CPR for over 40 minutes, but he was unfortunately declared dead.

Authorities have launched an official investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.

The police chief was a highly distinguished 1994-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer belonging to Tripura cadre. He had officially stepped into the prestigious role of top cop for the state in May 2025.

He was on central deputation between 2005 and 2013 during which he headed the CBI, serving in various cadres. During this second period, he served in the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), and returned to the CBI as a Joint and Additional Director.

Dhankar was entrusted with highly sensitive national assignments, most notably heading the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the Ministry of Home Affairs to investigate the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

Given his unblemished service in various positions in both the state and the centre, the news about his passing away has grabbed the headlines of national media.
