Elon Musk’s Starlink is making another push to expand its satellite internet services in India, with the company reportedly submitting a fresh application for its Gen 2 constellation. The move could strengthen Starlink’s plans to connect underserved communities.
Starlink says its service could be particularly useful in rural and remote parts of India, where traditional internet infrastructure remains limited. Musk himself highlighted the potential to serve communities that are currently poorly connected.
The company’s new Gen 2 system would operate in low Earth orbit at altitudes between 340 and 615 kilometres. It is also expected to introduce direct to device connectivity.
This technology could allow compatible consumer devices to connect directly through satellites, potentially reducing dependence on traditional telecom networks and improving connectivity in difficult to reach areas.
Starlink had previously faced regulatory hurdles in India. Its earlier application for the larger constellation was rejected over certain technical and spectrum related requirements, while approval was later given for its Gen 1 constellation.
However, the road ahead is still not completely clear. Security clearances and spectrum allocation remain important issues before satellite internet services can begin commercial operations in India.
If Starlink receives the required approvals, its satellite network could become particularly significant for rural and remote India. The big question now is whether Musk’s ambitious connectivity plans can finally get the green light.
