Finally, Something Good And Big Happening In Indian Food Industry

Finally, there could be a big change coming to packaged food in India, and this time it is something that can directly help consumers.

FSSAI has proposed putting clear red warning labels on the front of packaged food products that contain high levels of sugar, salt or saturated fat.

So instead of checking the tiny nutrition details on the back of a packet, consumers could soon see clear warnings such as HIGH SUGAR, HIGH SALT or HIGH FAT right on the front.

This can be especially useful for parents. Many packaged snacks, drinks and other food products look attractive, but people may not always notice how much sugar, salt or fat they contain.

The proposal also includes a separate warning for certain highly sweetened beverages.

The plan is expected to be implemented in phases. Initially, products high in two or more of these nutrients could carry the warning. Later, products high in even one nutrient could also come under the system.

The proposal comes after the Supreme Court raised concerns about the delay in introducing clear front of pack nutrition labelling.

This is still only a proposal and not a final rule. But if it becomes a reality, it could give Indian consumers something very important: a clear warning before they buy the product.

No complicated labels. No searching through the back of the packet.

Just look at the front and know what you are buying.
