A new trend has overtaken the bustling city of Hyderabad– “rent-a-boyfriend” and “rent-a-girlfriend” services that promise companionship for a price. These boyfriends or girlfriends may accompany customers to events and dinners to offer emotional support and conversation. The trend first emerged in Japan and quickly became a sensation on the internet.

While the platforms claim to offer legitimate companionship, law enforcement authorities say many such profiles may be fake and could be designed to extract money from unsuspecting customers.

The services offer a range of packages. According to social media advertisements, customers can pay for companionship ranging from walking and talking to accompanying them for movies, dinner or social events. Premium packages promise additional services such as personalised attention and emotional support.

The biggest concern for experts is when money is paid in advance. Several of these platforms reportedly ask customers to transfer payments or deposits before arranging an actual meeting. This creates the possibility of customers losing money if the service provider disappears or if the promised person does not exist.

Hyderabad Police officials have also warned that many profiles could be fake or AI-generated. The terms and conditions of some platforms have also raised concerns. The websites often use vague language leading to confusion in what the customers are paying for.

The companies may also use stock photos and reserve the right to change service-related information. We currently lack a clear legal framework governing such companionship services. Police has urged people to verify the authenticity of profiles and report suspected fraud.

As Hyderabad gears up for Rent-a-Romance services, authorities say the idea may appear novel and harmless on the surface, but the lack of regulation and the growing number of online scams make caution essential.
