Remember Robot, the Rajinikanth-Shankar blockbuster? In the film, scientist Vaseekaran creates an advanced humanoid robot, Chitti. But things take a dangerous turn when the robot falls into the evil hands and eventually turns against its own creator, even trying to kill him. A similar fear is now being raised about artificial intelligence (AI).
AI researcher Jacob Coxon, who has worked at both OpenAI and Anthropic, has quit Anthropic and issued a chilling warning: AI could potentially kill humans by the end of this decade. Jacob Coxon shared his concerns in a series of posts on X, saying AI companies are moving too quickly toward highly advanced systems that could eventually improve themselves. “I resigned from Anthropic today,” Jacob Coxon wrote. He said he had spent the last three years doing AI pretraining research at OpenAI and Anthropic.
According to Coxon, neither company is acting responsibly enough, and both are involved in a race toward what he called “self-improving superintelligence.” He warned that people should not underestimate the power of technology. Coxon said future AI systems could become superhuman, with the ability to hack systems, transform entire industries almost overnight and gain access to real-world power and resources.
Jacob’s biggest concern is that AI development is moving rapidly, with no clear sign that the progress is slowing down. “The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade,” he said.
Jacob Coxon also stated that this fear is not simply a marketing strategy. He said some executives and senior AI researchers may sound more cautious when speaking publicly, while privately expressing serious concerns about the risks. He went even further, saying that no other human activity poses a similar level of danger.
Coxon’s comments are likely to fuel the growing debate over how quickly companies should develop increasingly powerful AI systems and what safeguards should be in place. The big question is now the same one raised in the film Robot, what happens when the technology created by humans becomes more powerful than the humans who created it?
