A woman in Mumbai has reportedly kept her father’s dead body preserved in a freezer for nearly four years after his death. The shocking incident came to light recently after neighbours complained of a strong foul smell coming from the house.
The incident happened in Mumbai West, where residents alerted the police after noticing the smell for several days. When the police entered the locked house, they reportedly found the elderly man’s body inside a freezer box. A board outside the house also mentioned that a daycare centre would soon be opened there.
The woman was brought in for questioning and reportedly told the police that she deeply loved her father and did not believe he was truly gone. She allegedly said that she wanted his body to remain with her. She also claimed that she had contacted a company in the US that preserves bodies for long periods.
According to reports, the woman was planning to send her father’s body to the US and preserve it there. However, police reportedly asked her to perform the final rites as per tradition following complaints from neighbours. After she refused, a case was registered and the body was shifted to a mortuary.
Such incidents are not entirely new in India. In one case in East Godavari, two daughters reportedly kept their mother’s body at home for 22 days and used chemicals in an attempt to preserve it.
There have also been court observations concerning the preservation of dead bodies. In certain circumstances, bodies can be preserved for a limited period for personal or legal reasons, generally through authorised mortuary facilities. Medical or suspicious death cases can involve different procedures. However, keeping a body at home for years is an entirely different matter and can lead to legal action.
