Musk’s Big Allegation On Indian Telecom’s Alleged Monopoly

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has made a shocking allegation about the Indian telecom sector. Reacting to a post on why his Starlink internet services are yet to be launched in India, Musk accused certain Indian businessmen are deliberately influencing the government to deny permission to his company.

His outburst came right after SpaceX’s Vice President of Starlink Business Operations, Lauren Dreyer said that Starlink has built 20 ground gateway sites with hundreds of antennas across India and is ready to start operations once the government gives approval.

Reacting to a post on X, which stated that India desperately needs Starkink services so that all households across the country gets access to Internet, Musk replied “Unfortunately, we are being blocked by certain oligarchs in order to maintain their monopolistic chokehold on the Indian people. You can guess who they are … This is a crime against the people of India!”

Musk’s open criticism has sparked a huge debate on how some of the leading telecom operators are trying to influence those in power to fulfill their business interests by intentionally delaying reliable connectivity which could help millions get internet access through satellite signals.

How the Indian government balances local business interests with foreign tech innovation will decide the fate of Starlink. It is a known fact that some of the richest Indian businessmen have their investments in telecom sector. So, Musk’s allegation is also seen as a direct attack on those business tycoons. But, how the Indian government reacts to this open attack by Elon Musk needs to be seen.

Starlink is a satellite-based internet service operated by Musk’s SpaceX that uses a massive network of low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites.
