A deadly earthquake hit Morocco killing more than 1000 people. A magnitude 6-8 earthquake struck about 50 miles from the city of Marrakesh in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco.

This earthquake hit after 11 pm on Friday was the largest to strike the area in more than 100 years. It forces many residents of Marrakesh to evacuate their homes and run to open squares in the city.

Rescue teams are working relentlessly in removing large boulders and pulling the bodies from the rubble. Some of the ancient homes were also damaged and heavy equipment is being used to search the survivors.

More than 1200 are said to be injured in the earthquake. King Mohammed VI of Morocco mobilized the army’s search and rescue teams to find and rescue the survivors, using helicopters and drones.
