Taapsee’s Film Cracks Highest-ever OTT Deal

The Indian cinema industry is still looking at the revival of the theatrical business while a few already lost hope in it. A few realized it very early and decided to release their films on OTT platforms. Prithviraj Sukumaran and Suriya created a new trend by releasing their films directly on digital platforms. Now, we have Taapsee joining their list.

Taapsee Pannu’s last outing Haseen Dillruba skipped its theatrical release and opted for a direct digital release on Netflix last month. If the latest grapevine is anything to go by, her next film Rashmi Rocket is also opting for a direct OTT release.

According to the B-Town sources, popular OTT platform Zee5 struck a deal of whopping Rs. 58 crores with the makers of Rashmi Rocket for an exclusive digital release. This is reportedly the highest OTT deal for any female-centric film in India. That proves the popularity of Taapsee among Hindi audiences. An official announcement regarding its OTT release is expected to be made soon.

Rashmi Rocket features Taapsee in the role of an athlete hailing from a small town. Her journey of becoming an international champion forms the main crux of the film. Abhishek Banerjee, Supriya Pathak, and Priyanshu Painyuli play other important roles in the film. Akarsh Khurana is directing the film and Ronnie Screwvala is bankrolling it under the banner of RSVP.

In Malayalam, we have seen actor Prithviraj Sukumaran decided to give his films a release on the OTT platforms. His two films Cold Case and Kuruthi are already streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

In Tamil, it is Suriya who released his biggie Soorarai Pottru on Amazon Prime Video. He already inked a deal for his next four films (as an actor and as producer) to have a direct OTT release.
