2 Cr Budget; 50 Cr Revenue For This Horror Comedy

Sometimes, films made with a minimal budget earn 10-20 times the investments. Marathi films Sairat, Telugu film Pelli Choopulu and Tamil film Love Today are some of those movies. Now, Malayalam film Romancham joined the list. It was made on a budget of mere 2 crores and has grossed more than 50 crores at the box office.

Romancham doesn’t feature any star hero. Popular supporting actor Soubin Shahir plays one of the leads in it. The film is set in 2007. It is about a few flatmates who play the Ouija game for fun. What happens next is the main plot of the film.

This horror-comedy directed by Jithu Madhavan didn’t have distributors before release. But once it hit the theatres, there was no stopping. It was released on February 3. Within one month, the film collected more than Rs.50 crores at the box office. It is still having a great run in theatres.

Reportedly, many Tamil and Telugu producers are competing to buy the remake rights of this movie. Very soon, we may watch Romancham’s Telugu or Tamil remake. Once there were no takers for the movie and now, it became a blockbuster even though there are no stars in it. That is the power of story and narration.
