Popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg’s sudden death in September shocked the entire North-East region. It was reported that Zubeen died while swimming without a life jacket on the coast of Saint John’s Island in Singapore. However, there were many doubts and speculations about his death.
Now, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma alleged that Zubeen’s death wasn’t an accident but a murder. Speaking at the Assam Assembly today, Himanta Biswa said that the government is probing Zubeen Garg’s murder because the state’s emotions are with him.
Himanta Biswa said that there was something suspicious about Zubeen’s death, and something was missing in the case. Thus, an FIR has been filed under BNS sections 61 (criminal conspiracy), 105 (culpable homicide), and 106 (causing death by rash and negligent act). He stated that during the initial stages of the investigation itself, the Assam Police found that the death was due to murder.
Garg died while swimming in the sea during his yacht trip in Singapore. He was in Singapore to attend the North East India Festival (NEIF). After his death, more than 60 cases were filed to investigate the cause of death, as they believed it was not an accident.
Eventually, the government of Assam formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to probe the case. Later, a one-man inquiry commission led by Gauhati High Court’s sitting judge, Justice Soumitra Saikia, was also formed by the government to investigate the case.
Meanwhile, the Singapore Police Force is also carrying out an independent investigation into Garg’s death. It was stated that the deadline for the commission to record statements and submit evidence is December 12.
