Janhvi Kapoor’s First Public Reaction To Peddi Controversy

Janhvi Kapoor has finally opened up about the controversy surrounding her role in Ram Charan’s Peddi. During her appearance on Karan Johar’s show, she admitted that the way her character was presented was problematic and said she could have handled things differently.

“Was it problematic? Was it extreme objectification? Did it even propagate sexual assault narratively? Yes,” Janhvi accepted that she could have done more. She faced criticism over the sexualised presentation of her character, as a section felt a few scenes objectified her instead of giving her character respect.

Reacting to the criticism, Janhvi accepted that she could have spoken up against it but chose to remain silent, as she was part of the process and all these scenes were mentioned in the script, but the camera angles of how it would be shot were not mentioned.

The actress also spoke about how she felt after the criticism began. She said she blamed herself for not being more vigilant and admitted that she should have used her privilege to question the way her character was presented.

Janhvi explained that in the South, actors rarely get to see a bound script or the camera angles in advance. She said she was trying to make things less problematic as more information became available to her.

Describing the experience, Janhvi said, “It was a violating experience in a way.” She added that she hopes the experience will make directors think twice before presenting a lead actress in a similar way.

Janhvi also acknowledged that she has learned from the experience and will not put blame on anyone, as she was part of the entire setup. Her comments have brought the Peddi controversy back into the spotlight.

The debate is not just about how female characters are showcased in films like Peddi but whether heroines should question scenes they feel are inappropriate. However, one needs to see what Buchi Babu Sana has to say about Janhvi’s comments. Remember, he apologised as soon as Peddi was released.
