While many actors of his age and status in other languages are struggling to have more than one release in a single year, Malayalam superstar and legendary thespian Mohan Lal achieved a rare feat in 2025 by scoring a hat-trick of box office hits with L2 Empuraan, Thudarum and Hridayapoorvam.
While L2 Empuraan and Thudarum emerged as one of the biggest grossers of all time in Kerala, Hridayapoorvam managed to attain hit status in the long run with a decent haul.
What is more astonishing is that the actor had his fourth release of the year with Vrusshabha, a bilingual fantasy drama centred on the concept of reincarnation, which hit the screens on the eve of Christmas. Unfortunately, the ambitious drama failed to live up to the expectations and managed only below par reviews from critics and disappointing word of mouth from moviegoers.
Going by the trade estimates, Vrusshabha is likely to end on a disappointing note at the box office and might hamper the success streak of Mohan Lal. Vrusshabha was made on a solid budget of 120 Crores with high technical values. As Mohan Lal is riding a success wave, Vrusshabha just needed a decent output to capitalise on the Christmas holiday followed by long weekend and New year eve. But, the openings are very low and the poor mouth talk impacted the numbers further.
Vrusshabha will need a miraculous turn around to recover the investment or else the box office fate is already sealed. Though it was promoted as a bilingual and released in other South languages as well, there is hardly any response from moviegoers in Telugu, Tamil and Kannada.
Mohan Lal will now get a chance to make amends with the third installment of his blockbuster franchise Drishyam. The Jeetu Joseph directional has already completed the shooting formalities and will hit the screens next year. There are huge expectations on the third part as the first two installments turned out to be massive hits. It remains to be seen if he bounces back bigger this time or not.
