HC Strikes Down Parking Fees, Big Blow To Single Screens!

Reports are emerging that Telangana High Court had struck down the G.O. No. 121 allowing Parking Prices to be collect in Single Screen Theaters in Telangana.

This will be a huge blow to the Single Screen Theaters in the state which are making some financial leeway with the revenue from Parking and Canteen.

Earlier, the KCR Government exempted the collection of Parking Fees in the Single Screen Theaters and Multiplexes.

Later after the COVID, the Single Screen theaters represented to the Government and sought exemption citing their financial difficulties. Multiplexes continue to offer free parking.

In recent times, Multiplexes are also trying to bargain with the Government to get Parking Charges revived. But then, the High Court canceled the Parking Charges for Single Screens too now.

The High Court has now suspended GO 121 of 2021, which was issued by the MAUD department to exempt single-screen theatres from providing free parking. The court has made it clear that if a consumer has a movie ticket, parking is free. This will be a huge blow for the struggling theaters but will benefit the consumers. We will have to see how the theaters respond.

A writ petition filed by Prem Ramavath after Konark Theatre in Dilsukhnagar collected a Rs 20 parking fee from a moviegoer. Challenging this collection, a case was filed in the High Court.

Advocate Vijay Gopal who is filing cases left right and center against Special Premieres and Ticket Prices Hike filed this petition.
