After Manjummel Boys, Dark Mystery Loading With Balan

Following the phenomenal success of Manjummel Boys, all eyes have been on what director Chidambaram would do next. If the trailer of Balan: The Boy is any indication, the filmmaker is venturing into far darker and more psychologically layered territory. While Manjummel Boys carried warmth even during its most intense moments, Balan: The Boy surrounds its emotional core with an unsettling sense of dread.

The trailer offers no comic relief, no easy explanations, and no clearly defined villain. Instead, it maintains a consistent tone of tension from beginning to end, creating an atmosphere that lingers long after the trailer ends. One of the trailer’s most intriguing elements is the complete absence of a visible antagonist. Audiences never see the source of danger, only its effects.

The mother constantly looks over her shoulder, moves with urgency, and appears to be preparing for threats that never fully materialize on screen. This unseen menace becomes even more compelling when paired with the film’s central mystery surrounding young boy. The boy remains an enigma throughout the trailer, while the recurring motif of changing names hints at a larger conspiracy or hidden past. Every rewatch reveals fresh details, making the trailer a puzzle viewers are eager to solve before the film arrives.

The film also introduces a talented ensemble led by young actor Adhisheshan and actress Farzana Palathingal, whose performance dominates nearly every frame of the trailer. Farzana portrays a mother who is protector, fugitive, and survivor all at once, while Adhisheshan appears to carry the emotional weight of the story. Adding further intrigue are appearances from filmmakers-turned-actors Girish AD and Jean Paul Lal, reflecting Chidambaram’s preference for collaborators who understand storytelling from behind the camera as well as in front of it.

The film’s growing momentum has been further amplified by a large-scale promotional campaign. The trailer was launched nationally by stars Ajay Devgn, Suriya, Naga Chaitanya, and Raj B. Shetty in their respective languages. Following a well-received screening at the Cannes Film Festival, the film has continued to attract attention both in India and internationally. With Kerala special premiere planned on June 18 and a wide Telugu release through Annapurna Studios on June 19, Balan: The Boy is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated pan-India releases of the season.
