Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), and now, Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026). It is the 38th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the fourth film in the MCU Spider-Man series. After the third film, Marvel Studios took around five years to release the fourth in theatres. As expected, there was immense hype around the film, with pre-sales worldwide, including in India, soaring as the release neared. Did the film live up to all this hype and expectation? Did Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, entertain the audience once again? How did Tom Holland fare as he reprised the role of Spider-Man for the fourth consecutive time? More importantly, will we see a fifth film soon in the MCU Spider-Man film series? Let’s explore with a detailed analysis.
What is it about?
At the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, we saw Doctor Strange, cast the spell and erase the memories of Peter Parker from everyone’s mind. Now, after five years, Peter Parker(Tom Holland ) as Spider-Man, continues to save New York and it’s people from evil forces. But, the need for being around his loved ones, MJ(Zendaya) & Ned(Jacob Batalon), continues to grow with each passing day. In the meantime, the head of the department of damage control, Bill Metzger(Tramell Tillman), seeks Spider-Man’s film in finding and neutralising a potential invisible threat. What exactly is the potential risk and threat which Jean Grey(Sadie Sink) poses to humanity? How did Peter neutralise Jean’s threat? Did Peter get to meet MJ & Ned and remind them of who he is? Forms the rest of the story.
Analysis:
Before the film begins, a short video note from Tom Holland appears, where he thanks the audience for embracing and loving the character ‘Spider-Man’ and mentions that Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the most emotional film yet in the MCU Spider-Man series. Indeed, he was right, and this set the right expectations. It has everything one would expect from a Spider-Man film, but it isn’t just about Spider-Man saving New York City, or America, or the world. The film explores the inner soul of Peter Parker, delving deep into his heart. What does he truly desire? Does his heart crave normal human emotions like love, friendship, and family? If you enjoy exploring Spider-Man’s emotional side, you’ll likely enjoy the film immensely. However, if you attend expecting a straightforward superhero action drama, you may find yourself somewhat disappointed.
‘Be honest to yourself. Do you like being Spider-Man? Or, would you prefer life as Peter Parker? Just because you and I are special and have powers, does it mean we should be denied a personal life and solely dedicate ourselves to saving the world, isn’t that cruel?’, asks Jean Grey (Sadie Sink) to Peter Parker. ‘People close to you, love you for who you are, not because of the powers you possess’, says the aunt, May Parker. ‘What exactly do you mean when you say you decide to stay away from me to protect me?, asks Michelle Aka MJ of Peter Parker. – These three questions or statements from the three women, perfectly summarise the film and at the end, Peter Parker asks himself an important question ‘Do I really need to do it all alone?’. The film carries a heartwarming emotion throughout. We get to feel the pain of Peter, we get to smile with him, we start to wish for Peter to have a normal life like all of us. This time around, the writing team made sure to give an emotional backstory to the antagonist character and it worked very well.
The initial fifteen minutes of the film were all over the place. It felt as if we were watching a showreel of the heroics of Spider-Man. It seemed like the director and the writing team, wanted to satisfy the people who expect action from the film and rushed the initial few minutes with random action episodes without a proper promise. The film got back on track after the initial few minutes and continued the same momentum until the end. There was a lot of funny banter between the characters which generated quite a few laughs throughout the film. Almost all sequences between Peter & Frank, worked out superbly. Especially, the sequence between the two during the pre-climax was nicely done. And, the final sequence between Peter and Ned Leeds, was a treat to watch. We wait throughout the film for Ned to recognise Peter and when he finally does, it felt so good to watch their reunion on screen.
The writing team did a very good job in developing an emotional arc around Peter Parker’s character. His bond with MJ, Frank, Ned and May Parker, was handled beautifully. However, a bit more care in writing could have been taken in developing the backstory of Jean Grey and her sister, Sara Grey. The idea to show them as potentially dangerous individuals with superpowers was good but the entire story was wrapped up in just one sequence without properly establishing the bond between the sisters. Also, the post-credits scene is likely to leave you disappointed. Yes, in the end, we get a hint about the fifth film from the MCU Spider-Man film series but it should have been conveyed in a better way instead of wrapping the film with a namesake post-credit scene.
Overall, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, is indeed the most emotional film yet in the franchise. There are action episodes, there are mind-blowing visuals, there is a few surprises from the MCU, there is Hulk and there is a spellbinding background score. It has everything we expect from a Spidey film. But, it is the idea of showing the humane side of the superhero, which worked well in the film. For a change, Spider-Man did not get to flex his superpowers much but he did spell magic with his heart this time around. Watch it with your friends and family at a theatre near you, preferably a 3D version in 4DX format and will certainly leave the theatre with a smile on your face. And yes. Spider-Man will return soon. Wait for him.
