The Aravalli Hills, one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world, have suddenly come into national focus after the central government announced a major decision related to mining. Stretching nearly 670 kilometers from Delhi to Gujarat, the Aravallis pass through Haryana and Rajasthan and play a key role in protecting the environment of North India.
Recently, reports emerged that scientific studies and satellite data had identified rich natural resources in the Aravalli region. This led to concerns that large scale mining could be allowed in the future. Social activists and environmental groups raised alarms, warning that mining would damage forests, groundwater levels, and the fragile ecosystem. Protests and political criticism slowly began to grow.
Amid this rising pressure, the Modi government took a clear step back. The Centre announced a complete ban on granting new mining leases in the Aravalli region. The ban will be strictly enforced across the entire stretch from Delhi to Gujarat. State governments have been instructed to follow the order carefully. The Centre has also asked expert bodies to study the region further and mark additional sensitive zones that need long term protection.
However, the issue has not fully settled. Some environmentalists remain cautious and say doubts still exist about earlier surveys and land classifications. They fear that changes in definitions could later reopen doors for mining in certain areas.
Politically too, the move has drawn attention. Critics say the government acted only after public pressure increased, while supporters argue that the decision proves the Centre’s commitment to environmental safety.
For now, the mining ban has brought temporary relief to the Aravalli Hills. Whether this protection remains permanent or changes with future policies is something only time will tell.
