Why Was the Indian Student Treated Like That?

The video of US authorities handcuffing an Indian student and pinning him to the ground at the Newark Airport in New Jersey created concern on social media. The disturbing video showed four officials pinning him to the ground, with two of them keeping their knees on his back.

The footage showed the student’s hands and legs tied, treating him like a criminal. The video was captured by a witness and India-American entrepreneur, Kunal Jai, which showed the US authorities treating an Indian student like a criminal.

It is learnt that he is a student from Haryana and in the US illegally. He would be deported back to India, basing on a court order. The Indian consulate in New York is in contact with the US authorities.

The student entered the US illegally without a valid visa for which he was apprehended by the US authorities. The US authorities took him into custody at Newark during his transit after finding his behavior not conducive for travel and then admitted him to a medical unit.

Once the medial authorities declare him fit for travel, the Indian student will be deported to India. The Indian embassy in Washington DC  is learnt to have got in touch with the US officials to know about the case details.

Netizens reacted strongly, stating that while entering the U.S. illegally is a punishable offense, the way the authorities manhandled the student was completely unfair and could have been dealt with more humanely.
