A recently released draft design for a commemorative $1 coin to mark America’s 250th anniversary in 2026 features a portrait of US President Donald Trump. While images of the Trump $1 coin have been going viral on social media, US Treasurer Brandon Beach took to X and confirmed the authenticity of the images, saying, “No fake news here,” and revealed that the designs were part of the ongoing efforts to celebrate the country’s historic event.
The first design of the coin shows Trump’s profile on the front, with “Liberty” written at the top and “In God We Trust” written at the bottom, alongside the years 1776 and 2026. The reverse side features an image of Trump raising his fist after the 2014 assassination attempt in Pennsylvania, with the phrase “Fight Fight Fight” emblazoned above it.
However, the $1 Trump coin has already become controversial, with legal challenges that may prevent the coin from going into production. Under US law, coins cannot feature the image of a sitting or living president for at least two years after their death. The law also prohibits a head and shoulders portrait or bust of any living person on the reverse side of the coin, as Trump’s portraits appear on both the front and reverse sides of the coin.
While the front portrait of Donald Trump could bypass the restrictions by not being a full portrait, the reverse image may still violate legal guidelines. The coin is designed following the passing of the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act, which authorizes the minting of special $1 coins between 2026 and 2027, with designs symbolizing the nation’s history. A US Treasury spokesperson has confirmed that no draft design of the coin has been finalized for minting.
If the Trump commemorative $1 coin is approved, it would be one of the few instances of a living president being featured on US currency, something that has not been done since Calvin Coolidge was commemorated in 1926. Meanwhile, White House press secretary Emily Leavitt stated that she was unsure if Trump had seen the draft images but believed that he would “love it” if he did.
