Trump Brings Relief on Medicine Costs for Americans

After seizing more than 200 website domains linked to India-based criminal network operating illegal online pharmacies, the Trump administration on Thursday launched website TrumpRx, to help patients buy prescription drugs directly at a discounted rate.

Speaking after the launch, US President Donald Trump said that the people would save a fortune and it is also good for overall healthcare. The website is hosted by the Trump administration but it would not sell any medications.

The website will act like a facilitator leading the user to drugmakers’ direct-to-consumer websites where medicines can be purchased. The government-hosted website provides coupons to use at various pharmacies to avail the discounts.

With people expressing concern over the increasing costs of all goods, the Trump administration is trying to tackle the challenge. Reports said that the website was launched after multiple delays, ahead of the midterm elections slated for November.

The US President claimed that he had pressurized the pharma companies on charging the same costs in the US, like in other countries. As a result, prescription drugs in foreign countries would cost more, he said.

“We’re tired of subsidizing the world,” Trump said at the evening event on the White House campus. Though nothing is clear about the impact the change in prices would have on the family budgets, the Trump administration is claiming that the website would provide substantial discounts.

The site launches with nearly 40 medications, including weight-loss drugs such as Ozempic and Wegovy. Moreover, the site includes the disclaimer that prices “may be even lower” for people with insurance, as it lists the “out-of-pocket price.” Also, some consumers might be able to use available generics that cost less than brand-name medications.
