USA: Indian-Origin Worker Dies in Road Crash

In a rather unusual and alarming pattern, Indian origin individuals staying in abroad have been finding themselves at the centre of tragedies, suicides, shootings and arrests in the last few months. Now, another similar incident is being reported from USA.

As per the latest reports, an Indian-origin highway worker identified as Dipak kumar Patel of Delmar, was killed in a road crash in Maryland at a road work site along northbound U.S. 13 in Princess Anne. He was 70 years old and his remaining details are not known as of now.

The unfortunate mishap happened on Tuesday afternoon when Patel was sitting inside a marked Maryland Department of Transportation vehicle while working on a highway maintenance project. A speeding Caravan crashed into the rear of his car and caused a fatal accident, leaving him dead on spot. Both the driver of the Caravan and a passenger were taken to a nearby hospital.

This is the second death of a highway worker in Maryland in a span of 3 days as a similar accident happened on April 25 during which another driver was killed due to a road crash. These deaths sparked huge outcry from union leaders and renewed calls for drivers to be cautious while driving on highways and follow the state’s Move Over law.

Union leaders of highway workers are now demanding immediate reforms, citing preventable deaths and systemic failures.
