Attacks on NRIs Have Increased Over the Last Five Years

Indian origin people are undoubtedly one of the most loved nationals across the globe. This is why millions move to other countries every year in search of a better living. Unfortunately, the situation has changed as attacks on NRIs have increased drastically in abroad in recent times.

It is well known that frequent incidents about attacks on Indians are being reported quite often these days. Reasons like hate crime and racial discrimination are cited as the motto behind these crimes.

According to the data shared by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in Parliament, the number of attacks on Indians living overseas has climbed sharply over the last five years. The exact cases show a rise from just 15 in 2021 to 104 cases in 2025, marking an almost sevenfold increase.

USA reported the highest number of incidents during the five-year period with 33 cases. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates with 32, the United Kingdom with 31, Canada with 30, Ireland with 24, Russia with 23, and Germany with 19. In total, 302 attacks on Indians were recorded between 2021 and 2025 across 36 countries.

The data also shows that the yearly count has continued to grow. After 15 cases in 2021, the number increased to 31 in 2022, 67 in 2023, 85 in 2024, and reached 104 in 2025. Officials say the figures include different forms of violence and physical attacks reported to Indian missions abroad.

Data reveals a steady rise in violent incidents across top destinations for Indian students and workers. For instance, the United States saw cases grow from just one in 2021 to 14 in 2025. Similarly, Canada recorded an increase from three cases in 2021 to eight in 2025, while Mali saw a sudden surge of 11 cases in 2025 after having none in previous years.

The Indian diaspora is one of the largest in the world, with millions of citizens living, studying, and working across different countries. The government regularly raises safety issues with foreign authorities and provides consular support to Indians facing emergencies.
