US President Donald Trump has announced a ban on several media outlets from the White House, accusing them of spreading what he called “fake news” about his administration. Trump said he was banning CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House with immediate effect. “I am banning Fake News CNN, MSNOW…and Politico…from the White House,” Trump said. Donald accused the three outlets of “constantly” reporting what he described as fiction or lies about his administration. However, he did not provide specific examples of the reports that prompted the decision.
Trump later described it as a “very simple ban” but did not explain how it would be implemented. It is also unclear whether journalists working for the three outlets will be stopped from entering the White House grounds. Interestingly, reporters from CNN and Politico were still present at the White House shortly after Trump made the announcement. A CNN crew was also travelling with Vice-President JD Vance to and from an event in Iowa.
CNN strongly criticised Trump’s ban and called it an “illegal assault” on the press freedom and warned that the decision could face legal challenges. Politico also said it would continue reporting on the Trump administration and future administrations. MS NOW, formerly known as MSNBC, declined to comment. The White House Correspondents Association also criticised the move and said the association stood in defence of journalists who were being singled out for doing their jobs.
Meanwhile, Trump also suggested that more media organisations could face similar action. “Media outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report fiction and lies when they’re covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration or the United States of America. Other news outlets to follow,” Trump said.
