How a 6-Year-Old’s Toilet Break Saved Flydubai Passengers

A routine toilet break by a six-year-old girl turned into an unexpected turning point in a terrifying mid air emergency aboard a Flydubai flight. The child’s request to use the washroom set off a chain of events that helped passengers intervene and prevent a possible disaster.

Nina Manes was travelling with her parents, Tali and Zvika, on Flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv. When her mother took her towards the washroom near the front of the aircraft, she heard strange noises and repeated knocking from inside the cockpit.

Tali immediately alerted a nearby flight attendant and asked the crew member to check what was happening. When the cockpit door was opened, she was shocked to see blood and a violent struggle involving Indian Captain Smit Machchhar and his co pilot.

The situation became even more frightening when the aircraft suddenly began losing altitude. Nina started screaming that the pilot was being attacked. Her father, who was seated nearby, rushed towards the washroom after hearing his daughter cry, “Dad, we don’t want to die.”

Zvika then joined passengers Yaniv Hayun and Asaf Rajuan in confronting the attacker. They managed to overpower and restrain the co pilot while the injured captain received assistance. Two off duty pilots subsequently took control of the aircraft.

The flight was diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. What began as a simple toilet break eventually helped expose the cockpit emergency and bring passengers into action. The incident has since drawn attention to the courage of the injured Indian captain and the people who helped save those on board.
