In recent times, hundreds of migrants were killed due to unfortunate boat accidents during their illegal sea journeys in search of livelihood. Now, another terrible maritime disaster happened off the coast of Djibouti, where at least 109 migrants lost their lives when an overcrowded boat flipped over in the sea.
The tragic incident took place on the night of October 8 and 9 just north of the port town of Obock. According to media reports, the ill-fated boat was carrying about 305 to 350 migrants from Djibouti to Yemen across the dangerous Bab el-Mandeb Strait when it sank.
Out of the total bodies recovered so far, there are 52 men, 42 women, and 15 small children, including nine young girls and six boys. Search and rescue operations are still going on by local Djiboutian authorities because more than 116 people are still missing in the water.
Rescuers managed to save over 80 survivors, all of whom are Ethiopian nationals. They are getting medical and food assistance in Obock.
Every year, tens of thousands of Ethiopian and Somali migrants take this Eastern Migration Route. They travel through Djibouti to cross over to Yemen, hoping to reach wealthier Gulf countries like Saudi Arabia for work opportunities
