Online fraud: Techie Swetha Chowdary Kills Self!

A 22 years old software engineer killed herself after learning that she fell victim to online fraud. Going into details, the deceased is identified as Jasti Swetha Chowdary who hails from Nuvuluru of Mangalagiri mandal, Guntur district.

Swetha was working with a tech company in Hyderabad but due to covid-19, she has been working from her home town for the last three months. She met an unidentified person online and he lured her that if she invests Rs 1.2 Lakh, he would return her Rs 7 Lakh.

Initially Swetha was hesitant but the fraudster made her believe that this scheme is for real. The fraudster transferred Rs 50,000 to Swetha as she had insufficient money with her. Later Swetha paid Rs 1.3 Lakh to the fraudster and she was anticipating returns. She tried to reach the unidentified person but his phone was switched off.

Learning that she was duped, Swetha decided to end her life. However Swetha was supposed to travel to Hyderabad during the weekend with relatives. On Saturday evening, she took out her scooty and at around 8 PM, she jumped in Chillakallu lake and committed suicide. Before that Swetha sent a text message to her mother about her suicide.

The police reacted quickly to the complaint of Swetha’s parents but they could not rescue her. On Sunday morning Swetha’s body was recovered from the lake and a case was registered.

Online frauds are rampant and despite repeated incidents proving to be fake, people are still falling prey for these scams.
