In a setback to the Andhra Pradesh state government’s ambitious plan to construct houses for people from outside in the capital Amaravati region, the Centre has put a condition and refused to release the funds till the court cases are resolved. The Union Government didn’t budge despite the AP government making repeated requests.
Going into the details, the AP government wanted to construct houses for 47,017 people from outside in Amaravati capital. For this, the state government created a special R5 Zone by making necessary amendments to CRDA and even changed the masterplan of the capital city to accommodate the people from outside.
However, challenging this move of AP state government, many people from Amaravati have moved the High Court and Supreme Court. The court cases are pending. The Supreme Court stated that pattadars of Amaravati lands would get their ownership basis from the High Court’s final verdict. AP government and land pattadars of Amaravati are the contenders. The HC is yet to pronounce its verdict.
In this backdrop, the AP government approached the Centre to grant the funds to construct the houses. AP state government tried to convince the Centre that it would repay the funds released by the Centre towards these houses if it loses its fight in the High Court. However, the Centre didn’t agree to this. It made it clear to the AP government that it would only release the funds after resolving the pending court cases. This comes as a setback to the AP government ahead of the coming elections.
