For the first time in the history of the Telugu Desam Party, it will have zero representation in the Upper House of the Parliament. On April 2, the lone member from the party Kanakamedala Ravindra’s tenure would end. The nomination filing process for the RS seats has concluded on Wednesday but no party leader filed his nomination.
Meanwhile, the ruling YCP will secure all the three RS seats that would fall vacant, given the numerical strength in the Assembly.
The Upper House in the Parliament should have less than 250 members and the existing strength is 245. Of them, 233 members would be elected by the legislators of respective states while remaining 12 would be nominated by the President.
The number of Rajya Sabha members in AP state quota is 11. Before 2019, the YCP had two members while the TDP had nine but after the YCP won 151 seats, the number of RS seats for the TDP had dwindled.
On April 2, the tenure of Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy (YCP), CM Ramesh (BJP) and Kanakamedala Ravindra Kumar (TD) would be completed. Over 44 votes are needed to elect each Rajya Sabha member. Now, with the support of 151 MLAs, all the three seats would be secured by the YCP, rising the party strength in the Upper House to 11. All the RS seats in AP quota would be with the YCP without a single member from the Opposition parties.
With just 22 MLAs, it will be very tough for the TDP to win at least one seat. The elections for the three seats, belonging to the AP, that would soon fall vacant in the RS would be held on February 27.
