Global football icon, Lionel Messi, who has an insane amount of following across the globe set foot in India today and the trip did not start well. His arrival in Kolkata was met with poor management by the organisers, and as a result he stepped out of the stadium in 5 minutes.
This led to extreme public backlash as people started throwing bottles and towels at the stadium as they are anguished by the fact that Messi didn’t even spend 5 mins at the venue.
In fact, the situation was so very pathetic that chief minister Mamata Banerjee herself could not get a glimpse of Messi.
“I am deeply disturbed and shocked by the mismanagement witnessed today at Salt Lake Stadium. I was on my way to the stadium to attend the event along with thousands of sports lovers and fans who had gathered to catch a glimpse of their favourite footballer, Lionel Messi.
I sincerely apologise to Lionel Messi, as well as to all sports lovers and his fans, for the unfortunate incident.” She tweeted.
The West Bengal chief minister state she is constituting an enquiry committee under the chairmanship of Justice (Retd.) Ashim Kumar Ray, with the Chief Secretary and the Additional Chief Secretary, Home and Hill Affairs Department, as members.
The committee will conduct a detailed enquiry into the incident, fix responsibility, and recommend measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
The fact that the chief minister ordered an enquiry on this matter, just hours after the occurrence shows the gravity of the issue and the repercussions of the same.
