In the last 24 hours, Andhra Pradesh police made two arrests over alleged abusive or derogatory comments targeting Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Dy. CM Pawan Kalyan. While opponents tried to label both issues as political arrests, it is well known to the public on how the accused have crossed the line in the name of freedom of speech.
Now, Pawan Kalyan has made the intentions of the NDA government very clear with his latest fiery and intense press meet during which he clarified that there will no more tolerance if social media is being weaponized to attack the personal dignity of individuals. He came down heavily against those who he calls are a part of the social media abusive cartel.
Without referring to any particular incident, the Janasena supremo made it crystal clear that freedom of speech does not give anyone a license to use vulgar, obscene language or run organized defamation campaigns against public servants and their loved ones.
In his powerful address, Pawan Kalyan expressed deep emotional frustration, noting that even his own family members had been brought to tears by the disgusting nature of the online abuse. He warned that if political leaders and their households can be targeted so brazenly, the safety and dignity of ordinary citizens on the internet are at extreme risk and needs immediate intervention.
Addressing a common tactic that is being used by political opponents, Pawan Kalyan stated unequivocally that “criminals have no caste, no religion, and no political party.” He issued a stern warning that anyone who breaks the law and engages in character assassination cannot expect to hide behind a community or political identity once they are caught.
Pawan Kalyan also made a key announcement during this press meet. To offer real support to victims of online harassment, he announced that a dedicated grievance cell will be established directly within the Deputy CM’s office to handle social media abuse complaints. He encouraged victims to step forward and submit clear evidence of cyberbullying.
Concluding his speech, the Deputy CM hinted that the government is open to creating stricter, specialized laws in the future to tackle social media threats effectively.
This is a welcome move because so many anonymous social media users and some self-styled journalists and YouTubers with personal and political interests have been trying to concoct stories against the government and also using unparliamentary language without paying heed to consequences and later on trying to gain sympathy when they are proceeded with legal cases.
