KBR Park Hiatus: Rs 1000 Cr Saved, But 3000 Trees Lost?

The Hyderabad Metro administration has collectively decided to drop the plan to elevate the roadway corridor surrounding the KBR Park and this has become major news now. It is estimated that total of ₹1000 crore has been saved through the dismissal of this plan.

The existing one way traffic system will be in effect in the near future as well, and this would be the solution to the traffic congestion issue here. The earlier plan to construct multiple overpasses and underpasses will no longer be put to action.

As a solution, the officials have now proposed a single elevated corridor between Jubilee Hills Checkpost and Nagarjuna Circle, citing the effectiveness of the one-way traffic system introduced around the park.

The original project, however, had already attracted controversy over environmental concerns. There was significant backlash from the public as multiple trees were taken down in this process.

Around 3,000 trees were officially taken down in and around the park, while environmental groups claimed the number could be significantly higher. But considering the public social infrastructure that was being developed, not much was said against it.

And now that the development project has been scrapped, the money might’ve been saved but the environmental impact of taking down thousands of trees will remain with the city administration for a long time.
