Table-toppers Gujarat Titans took on Lucknow Super Giants in the 26th match of the IPL 2025. The match was held in Lucknow. Though Gujarat started off as favourites in the match, it was Lucknow which won the game effortlessly by 6 wickets.
Toss: LSG won the toss and elected to field first
First Innings:
GT’s openers, Sai Sudharsan (56) and Shubman Gill (60), have once again given a terrific first wicket partnership for their team. They made an opening partnership of whopping 120 runs and gave a strong base for GT to make a big score. However, once they got out in consecutive overs, none of the other batters were able to capitalise on the momentum. In the last 7 overs, GT managed to score only 58 runs, proving that they have a top-heavy batting lineup and can’t score big if those top three batters fall early. In the end, GT was able to make 180/6 in 20 overs. Shardul Thakur (2/34) and Ravi Bishnoi (2/36) scalped two wickets each.
Second Innings:
LSG also countered GT by starting the chase aggressively. Openers Rishab Pant and Aiden Markram made a partnership of 65 runs for the first wicket. After Pant got out, Markram (58) continued the momentum with in-form Nicholas Pooran (61). They both smashed GT bowlers all over the park. Especially, Pooran once again showed his extreme talent of hitting big shots. Both of them successfully scored their respective fifties as well. But once they got out, things have slowed down a bit for the team. However, due to the low required rate, LSG batters were able to finish the match quite comfortably even though they took it till the last over. In the end, LSG made 186/4 in 19.3 overs.
In a nutshell:
GT was on a roll with three consecutive wins before this match. They entered as favourites and also batted decently well in the first innings. However, more than 60% of their total runs were scored by openers Gill and Sudharsan. Other batters failed to carry the momentum, which resulted in GT scoring less than 200, when they clearly had a chance of scoring above 200. Like GT, LSG also has a top-heavy batting lineup. Once again, Rishab Pant failed to put on a good performance. However, Markram and Pooran did things well for LSG and put them in a comfortable position by the time they got out. This win will give a much-needed boost to LSG, as they won without their star opener Mitchell Marsh. On the other side, it will be a small bump in GT’s decent run so far. Both teams are in the top four positions after this match.
Scorecard: GT – 180/6 (20 overs) and LSG – 186/4 (19.3 overs)
Up Next: LSG will next play Chennai Super Kings on April 14.
Gujarat Titans will face Delhi Capitals on April 19.
